Italian conductor Oleg Caetani will lead the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra in performances of Schubert and Shostakovich symphonies. Schubert and Shostakovich’ s compositions draw on the brushstrokes of many predecessors and contain a variety of musical resources, demonstrating not only their admiration for the masters but also their outstanding talent for composition. Schubert’ s Symphony No. 5 in B - flat Major is known as the “Symphony without drums and trumpets” because it is the least instrumental of his symphonic works. The composition reflects his admiration for Mozart, as he integrates many of Mozart’ s musical themes, particularly in the opening movement. Schubert is renowned for his melodies, but the “retro” style of his compositions makes his exceptional style unique. Shostakovich is considered one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He grew up in a unique time when his works were both liked and abandoned. This results in some of the work’ s comedic elements being deemed ludicrous and satirical. Shostakovich incorporated the famous tune from Rossini’ s GUILLAUME TELL overture into the opening movement of Symphony No. 15 in A Major, creating a scene that feels like being transport listeners to a toy store where dolls come to life and play brass instruments. In the last movement, he referenced three well - known Wagnerian tunes from DIE WALKÜRE, GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, and TRISTAN UND ISOLDE. The piece encompasses many themes, from childhood to war, taking audience on a journey from fantasy to a stark, ironic reality.
